Small Wins & Big Leaps: How Entrepreneurs Move Forward

Above my desk hangs a whiteboard. It’s broken into sections for projects, ideas, and goals. But in the corner, there’s a little space that simply says:
“What wins can you do today?”
Someone said that phrase years ago, and it stuck with me. It’s become one of my guiding principles—not just in business, but in life.
Why Small Wins Matter
As entrepreneurs, we often put pressure on ourselves to make big moves, land big clients, or launch big projects. But the truth is, it’s the little wins along the way that create momentum.
- Sending the email you’ve been putting off.
- Tidying up a messy file system.
- Drafting a quick idea before it slips away.
These tiny actions may not feel monumental in the moment, but they add up. They fuel progress. They keep the energy moving forward.
I remind myself daily: if something takes a minute or two, do it now. Why wait?
The Fear of Not Trying
There’s another mindset that drives me, too. When I think about the big leaps I’ve taken—leaving a stable job, moving to a new city, starting my own company—I realize they all came down to one simple truth:
I’m more afraid of not trying than I am of failing.
That perspective has shaped my career as an entrepreneur and designer. I’d rather look back and know I gave something a shot, even if it didn’t work out, than wonder “what if?”
Don’t Forget How Far You’ve Come
Progress is easy to forget.
It’s so natural to get caught up in what’s next—what we haven’t achieved yet—that we forget where we are now was once something we dreamed about.
That’s what gratitude looks like in business and in life. It’s not just appreciating the big milestones; it’s recognizing that every step forward is proof that you’re moving.
So, the next time you feel frustrated about the moment you’re in, pause. Look around. Remind yourself: you’re standing in a place you once wished for.
Then—keep going.
How This Applies to Design & Branding
The same philosophy applies to branding and design.
- Those small wins? They’re the everyday touches—consistent logos, cohesive visuals, on-brand social media posts—that build recognition over time. Take a minute or two to do it correctly; it matters.
- Those big leaps? They’re the rebrands, website launches, new product launches, and bold campaigns that set you apart and take your business to the next level. Without taking the big leaps, you will have zero opportunity to get there.
Both matter. Both are necessary. And often, the small wins give you the courage (and the foundation) to take the big leaps.
To your next bold move,
Jess
